During the first week of Design Thinking I learnt a lot about the basics of what it is to have a Design Model and how important they are to the design process. In the coming weeks I also hope to learn more about Design Models and how I can further develop my designing skills.

In the class we conducted an activity in which we were required to build the tallest structure possible that could support a marshmallow out of spaghetti, string and sticky tape. During the marshmallow activity the group interacted well and we brainstormed a few viable design options. We decided on a Teepee like structure that could flex but still support the marshmallow. Unfortunately the structure didn’t stay standing as marshmallow was too top heavy and the structure fell over when the marshmallow was placed on top. I believe that our group communicated well despite the failed structure which is always a positive that can be taken out of group work.

Finally, during the class we watched a TED talk that explained the marshmallow experiment and how the design process models can be applied to this scenario. The video explained how different groups of people performed the task and how their design thinking backgrounds would have helped them to come to a solution with the overall challenge.
